L’editing del genoma è una vera e propria rivoluzione che ha travolto le Scienze della Vita. Una tecnica usata con i vegetali, gli animali e gli individui umani adulti in ambito clinico ma che stiamo cominciando a sperimentare anche sugli embrioni, dando vita a valutazioni etiche molto profonde e serie. Anna Cereseto, che con il suo team di CIBIO all’Università di Trento ha acquisito, provato e migliorato la tecnica CRISPR-Cas9, creando evoCas9, è convinta che la discussione sui risvolti etici derivanti dall’utilizzo di questa tecnologia non possa riguardare solo i tecnici e gli scienziati ma anche i bioetici, i giuristi e le parti sociali. Anche l’opinione pubblica deve essere consapevole e coinvolta in una discussione partecipata su una tecnologia che può portare a grandi benefici per l’umanità.

It is a technique that is used with plants, animals and adult human individuals in a clinical setting, and we are also beginning to try it out on embryos, giving rise to very profound and serious ethical considerations. With her CIBIO team, at the University of Trento, Anna Cereseto has acquired, tested and improved the CRISPR-Cas9 technique, to create evoCas9, and she is convinced that the discussion of the ethical implications resulting from the use of this technology cannot only be of concern to technicians and scientists, but also to bioethicists, lawyers and social partners.
